"I have chosen to work on reading comprehension because I feel that it is a topic that is left behind in the classroom. Although textbooks provide at least one reading in every unit, we are told to focus on speaking and listening skills more than on reading (and writing). Reading is still considered a skill that is a bit “boring” to teach and students themselves do not rejoice at the idea of reading.I also chose this topic because in my more than 15 years of teaching I noticed 2 things. Number 1: we see, meet and teach many students, most of them with average skills, but there is always one student who stands out, who understands and speaks better than his or her peers. When I talked to these students I always found out that they enjoy reading and read extensively. They read literary works, not just textbooks and reference books that are necessary for their studies.Number 2: textbooks are designed to teach comprehension and strategies of reading and teachers make sure to design activities that measure understanding, however, I do not feel that we can fully measure students’ understanding of a text. They can answer the questions, find the information, guess the meaning of a word, but I very rarely feel in class that a student fully understands. I usually receive the answers, but as soon as I probe a little more into the text I receive blank stares most of the times.I also found that usually the “to check comprehension” section in the teachers’ edition doesn’t really work, or only works with brighter students.In this project I will try to explore what makes a good reader, how we can try to encourage extensive reading and what are some things we can do in the classroom that will help students enjoy reading."^^ .
